The Monument is dedicated to the 52 Irish immigrants who perished in the Cornwall quarantine hospital between June 14th and October 18th, 1847 and to those who cared for them.

The Monument is 100 per cent sponsored by donations raised by a Committee that included Katie Burke, Dr. Robert Lynch, Josephine Donnelly, Trevor Wheeler and James Downey.  No government funds from any source were used in this project.
