The building of the Pitt St. Mall.

The construction of the Pitt Street Mall between 1st and 3rd streets was made possible when the Ontario Ministry of Housing announced its downtown revitalization program in 1976.

The province contributed $750,000 to the project with the balance provided locally.

The Mall’s official opening, September 30, 1978.  The total project cost $1,1 million.  The wall in the middle of the photograph was on the south side of 2nd street and had a waterfall.

The “Standard-Freeholder” enthused “That the two block area in the heart of the downtown business district now takes on a park-like environment complete with reflecting pools, a waterfall, numerous flower and tree beds and contemporary lighting fixtures.”
