Document of the Week. Marriage license, Matilda Township, 1838, signed by Lieutenant-Governor, Sir George Arthur, Province of Upper Canada.

“John McIbouyl (?) of Edwardsburgh within the District of Johnstown in the said Province, Gentleman, and Amelia Grant of Matilda, in the Eastern District in the said Province, Spinster.

the signature is Lieutenant-Governor’s George Arthurs.

Arthur served in Upper Canada from 1838 – 41.

The document has a paper seal in the top left hand corner.

It is watermarked:  W. Warren  1835.

This is an example of early 19th century documents in the archives at the Cornwall Community Museum.
