William “Willie” Joseph Major, MP for Glengarry-Precott, 1949 – 1953.

Major’s election marked the beginning of Glengarry’s Franco-Ontarian representation in the House of Commons.

Before entering Federal politics as a Liberal standard-bearer, Major served as the Reeve for Lancaster Township.  After his federal defeat he ran unsuccessfully in two provincial elections.  The “Standard-Freeholder” commented that he was “a good loser.”  Born:  1896 – died 1966.

This photograph is one of the hundreds the SD & G Historical Society is transferring to the Glengarry Archives.
